Sometimes you just stumble across a restaurant when you are walking down a street that catches your attention. That is how I felt when I was staying in Manhattan for Spring Break from school and was staying at the Sheraton Four Points a few doors down from Milanes Restaurant.

I saw how reasonable the restaurant was and the nice selection of dishes for breakfast and lunch. This Spanish restaurant has a Dominican influence in its cooking from it owners and chefs.

I stopped in for breakfast after seeing the menu and had never had a Dominican Breakfast before. My selection though ended up being very American with me ordering two breakfasts. I had an order of French Toast which was two very thick slices of bread dipped in an egg batter and sautéed nicely in butter. It had a rich caramelized outside and a soft creamy inside. It was served with a sweet commercial syrup that really enhanced the flavor.

For the other breakfast, I ordered the Scrambled Eggs with Bacon, White toast and Potatoes, which was a nice sized portion. The eggs were perfectly cooked and seasoned, the bacon was crisp and the potatoes were cooked in onions and a spicy sauce that complimented the rest of the meal. The whole breakfast with tip cost me $14.00 and was enough to carry me through lunch.

The breakfasts here are hearty

For lunch one afternoon, I stopped in for a snack and had freshly made Papas Rellenas, deep fried Potato Croquette’s with spiced ground meat inside. They were delicious. The mashed potatoes were creamy and butter and the outside was deep fried to a golden brown and the the meat inside was so well spiced. They served it with a side of hot sauce that added to the flavor of the dish.

I went for lunch with my best friend after seeing a show in the neighborhood and the food and service were great that afternoon. We started with freshy fried Empanadas filled with ground beef and shredded chicken ($3.00). The ground beef was really good and nicely spiced but the chicken was more of a shredded roast chicken than a ground chicken that I am used to but still they were really good. With their freshly made hot sauce it really brought out the flavor of the patties.

The Beef Empanadas are wonderful

I had a Cuban Sandwich that was filled with Swiss Cheese, shredded freshly roasted pork and ham with a side of pickles. The sandwich was on a fresh hoagie roll that was pressed until it was crisp and had a nice combination of flavors.

The Cuban Sandwich here is excellent

My friend had the Stewed Oxtail, which was a nice sized portion of Oxtail (two large sized cuts) with lots of meat on them with a side of rice and beans. The sauce had a nice rich spicy flavor in the sauce it was cooked in.

The service could not have been nicer and more welcoming to me. The ladies who were doing the cooking greeted me, sat me down and then served the food to me. It was a nice way to spend the day.

For lunch and early dinner, there is a selection of sandwiches, burgers and wraps along with several Dominican Shrimp and Chicken dishes.

I have to admit that the restaurant could use a renovation and maybe a few new tablecloths but what it lacks in aesthetics it more than makes up in food, service and prices. Since COVID, the prices have gone up a few dollars but a nice meal here is still half the price of most places in the Garment District.

I can’t wait to try the restaurant for other meals.
