This little pizzeria in downtown Red Hook, NY is more than just pizza. Their entrees are delicious too.

Village Pizza III at 7515 North Broadway (Route 9)

I came across Village Pizza III when I was visiting Red Hook, NY on a stop through on my way back from President Martin Van Buren’s home in Kinderhook, NY. I had wanted to visit the town to see if there had been any changes in the town over the last three years since my visit in the Christmas season of 2015.

The sauce on their pizza and pastas is amazing

I had just stopped in for a quick slice of pizza ($1.25) that afternoon and the pizza was amazing. The sauce on the cheese pizza was perfectly spiced and had a rich tomato flavor to it. You could taste the high quality tomatoes in the sauce. It was a perfect combination of cheese to the sauce and the crust and bottom were perfectly cooked. When you eat it, you can taste the rich tomatoy flavor of the sauce and the combination with the cheese is the perfect taste in each bite.

Don’t miss their specialty pizzas

On a recent weekend, I decided to go back and have dinner there when I was visiting Rhinebeck for the Sinterklass Parade weekend. I had gotten there later in the evening and several tables were filled with local families having dinner, which gave the pizzeria a nice family feel to it. Village Pizza III is more of a pizzeria than a restaurant but it does have eight tables for dining.

I ordered the Chicken Parmesan dinner with a side of spaghetti ($8.50) and when the meal came out it could have easily fed two people. The chicken was perfectly breaded and fried out with a large portion of their delicious sauce and mozzarella. Even under the sauce and cheese the chicken was tender and flavorful. There was a large portion size of spaghetti on the side, about a half pound, which made the meal quite large and without a big appetite hard to finish. I ate the whole thing plus the side of bread they gave me on the side.

Their chicken Parmesan is excellent

On my most recent trip to Village Pizza III after a football game in Poughkeepsie, I had a lunch/dinner there and tried their lasagna ($8.95), which was a large portion topped with their wonderful red sauce and lots of gooey cheese. The layers of pasta could have had more ricotta cheese inside of them but still it was flavorful and delicious.

The Fresh Green Salad comes with the entree for $1.00 extra

It was accompanied by four large pieces of fresh garlic bread and a side salad (for $1.00 extra well worth it). The salad was full of crisp vegetables and was served with a delicious creamy Parmesan peppercorn sauce. The garlic bread was a soft long roll cut into two and was loaded with fresh garlic. It was a lot of food for $11.00.

Their lasagna is a gooey delight

Another delicious item I ate recently was their Cheese Calzone ($6.95), that was stuffed to the brim with ricotta, mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses and baked into a golden crust. The outside was soft and chewy and cooked perfectly and the accompanying tomato sauce that is used in all of their dishes has a rich tomato flavor and was spiced.

On another recent trip to Red Hook to look at the downtown Christmas decorations for Christmas 2020, I stopped again for dinner with Village Pizza III being one of the few places open on a Tuesday evening. I was able to eat in being one of the only customers dining in that evening (under the COVID rules of 2020 at 25%).

Starting the meal with a salad with ranch dressing and bread

I had another slice of their wonderful cheese pizza and their Spaghetti and Meat ball dinner that was just excellent. They serve you what looked like a half pound of freshly cooked spaghetti with their delicious red sauce on top with two large, freshly made meatballs that were bigger than golf balls and a side of warm Italian bread. The most delicious comfort food on a cool night.

The Spaghetti and Meatballs are excellent here.

On a recent trip to Red Hook I stopped in for dinner on my way to taking pictures around the county. I was in the mood for a Meatball Parmesan sub and theirs’s is delicious.

The delicious Meatball sub

The meatballs are homemade and their tomato sauce accompanies them wonderfully. The meatballs were tucked into a soft chewy bun and more sauce was added. The sub was excellent.

I can’t tell you how good it was.

The Chicken Parm sandwich is also excellent. They give you a nice portion size of chicken cutlets with a slathering of their delicious tomato sauce and lots of gooey mozzarella cheese.

I did notice that when you are not a local they do look you over to see what you are all about but that is a small town for you. They seemed very happy though when I told them how much I enjoyed the meal.

The nice part about the menu is that nothing is over $10.00. The lasagna, stuffed shells and Baked Ziti are all $8.95 and those portion sizes are large too. Their submarine sandwiches range from $6.00 to $7.00 and again from what I noticed from the other diners at the adjoining tables were loaded with ingredients and most people took part of it home.

The service could not have been nicer. The family that runs this Village Pizza are very friendly and so welcoming that you feel like you are part of the community. I have also been the original pizzeria that is downtown Rhinebeck, NY and their food and service are of the same quality. The people that run this three restaurant chain know about good food and friendly customer service. I have not been to their Catskill location yet but I am sure that it is just as good as the other two.

For a very reasonable and high-quality meal when you are visiting Upstate New York, take a detour into Red Hook’s downtown for lunch or dinner at Village Pizza III. I know you will enjoy it.

Dining on a Shoestring in New York City and Beyond: Finding reasonable meals and snacks for around $20.00 and under

For a quick and reasonable and quality meal for around $20.00 in New York City and the surrounding towns, DiningonaShoeStringinNYC will help you stay in budget when traveling to the area.

*Bloggers note: prices have changed since many of these posts were created and since COVID have gone up a few dollars but are still fairly priced.

Hello everyone! Welcome travelers to New York City and the surrounding suburbs!

My name is Justin Watrel and I created ‘Dining on a Shoestring in New York City’ (DiningonShoeStringinNYC.wordpress.com) as an extension to the blogs: ‘MywalkinManhattan’ (MywalkinManhattan.com) along with ‘VisitingaMuseum’ (VisitingaMuseum.com) and “LittleShoponMainStreet” (“LittleShoponMainStreet@Wordpress.com), in search of a delicious meal for $20.00 and under.

It is difficult in an area as expensive as Metropolitan New York but many restaurant owners are paving the way with small, innovative menus at a fair price.

Sweets Bakery in Chinatown, NY

I created this blog when I discovered all these wonderful small restaurants, bodegas and bakeries that were fantastic both in that the quality of their food and the prices that they cost. I also looked at atmosphere and cleanliness of the establishment. Most cost under $20.00 (USA) for their main food items and provide small places to sit down and eat.

Since the COVID pandemic though, many of the places mentioned on this blog have either closed up shop (I have noted the months and years they closed up) or the prices have risen, in some cases significantly so please be aware when you visit these restaurants. I have tried to revisit many of them since the pandemic and prices have gone up by three or four dollars. I still continue to look for restaurants in the $10.00-$20.00 range that are of high quality and fair portion sizes.

Here and there  I found these eating establishments tucked in corners of the City, hiding on side streets or across from the schools where they were populated by students looking for a quick bite. I also found them near public housing or near the hotels where people were looking for a quick meal or a reasonable snack.

NoHo Juice Bar & Deli in Greenwich Village/NoHo

The signs I looked for where they accepted EBT (Electric Benefits Transfer) cards or where I saw the doormen, construction workers and cabbies eating. They always find the most reasonable places to eat and this is a group that will not tolerate food that doesn’t taste good. They would be too vocal about it (As I found on several trips to the same establishment where people would be talking about why they keep coming back and how bad the local competition was around the corner).

With everyone on a budget, I thought this would cater nicely to the traveler or NYC resident, who is looking to save some money while enjoying a quick meal or a snack when in New York City. I have extended the blog to outside New York City to all the surrounding places I have traveled on my blog, “MywalkinManhattan.com”. So you will see places in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware now.

Blue Sky Deli

Blue Sky-Harlem Taste Deli/Grocery in East Harlem, NY “Home of the Chopped Cheese”

In the era of COVID, I am finding that many of these places are either changing hands or are closing permanently. Please call ahead or Google the establishments to see if they are still open. It has amazed me how many of these once vibrant businesses closed their doors due the lack of customers. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on our industry.

Please share with me on the blog posts your insights on these establishments and let me know your recommendations. Please join me on the travels as I walk all the streets and avenues of Manhattan in my quest to walk every street of the Island of Manhattan in ‘MywalkinManhattan.com’. In many cases, I have cross-referenced these reviews to my TripAdvisor reviews so you can get other people’s opinions as well.

I hope you get a chance to travel to some of these locations and try these delicious and reasonable restaurants. Since the Pandemic some prices have gone up but for the most part all of these restaurants are still reasonable and under the now $20.00 limit that I put on them. There are still many on this list that are under $10.00 but that is getting harder to find.
