Dim Sum Station at 366 River Street

I passed Dim Sum Station many times on my way to work and I noticed it had finally opened. I was in the area on business and stopped for lunch. The food and the service were really nice.

The restaurant has the look of a fast-food restaurant and is served cafeteria style. You order your food at the counter, and you pick it up when the order is ready. All the items are pictured on the menu, so you have an idea of what you are ordering.

You order at the counter of the restaurant and pick up your food

I just picked up a couple of dishes of Dim Sum for a light lunch. I started with the Pork Soup Dumplings ($6.95). They were really good and properly steamed so they were soft and moist to bite into and had a nicely spiced pork mixture. The only problem was that they were not very soupy. Usually, they burst in your mouth when you bite into them. These tasted more like dumplings.

The Soup Dumplings were good but not very juicy

The Vegetable Spring Rolls ($4.95) were perfectly fried to a crisp perfection. You got three of them and they crunched when you bit into them. They were filled with crunchy fresh vegetables. With a little Duck Sauce to accent them, they are delicious.

The Spring Rolls are lightly fried to perfection

To finish the meal off, I had the Baked Roast Pork Buns ($4.95). Three nice sized pillowy buns that had a sweet taste to the dough and filled with chopped roast pork and a tangy sauce that it was mixed with it. They were steamed to perfection and were light and fluffy.

The Roast Pork Buns are light and sweet

The service was very friendly, and the food came very quickly. What is nice about Dim Sum Station is that everything is under $10.00, and you can adjust what you want to order and mix and match items for either a small snack or a larger meal.

There are a lot more wonderful things on the menu I plan to order in the future.

*(the restaurant changed names in April 2022 and the prices have gone up one or two dollars for the dishes. They still are reasonable).

The inside of Dumpling Dojo after the restaurant renovation.

There are times that I just stumble upon a really good restaurant by accident. I found Dumpling Dojo (formerly Big Bowls/Little Plates) on my Dining program with Mileage Plus and once I tried it I have been coming back ever since. The food and service are just excellent and the atmosphere is downtown ‘hip’.

The inside of Dumpling Dojo

For a small restaurant in downtown Rutherford, NJ it is so interesting in it’s décor. The use of the exposed brick walls, the Christmas lights on the ceiling and the wooden tables gives it a ‘City Vibe’ with a contemporary twist. The tables are larger made to share the space but in the era of COVID we are kept apart. When the restaurant reopened for dining, the tables were back to normal by 2022.

While most of the orders when I was there both times were take out, it is more fun to eat in when you have the chance. With excellent, friendly service and engaging jazz music in the background it makes for a wonderful place to dine in.

The urban vibe of Dumpling Dojo

The best part of Dumpling Dojo is the food. Everything I have had here is excellent. My trip to the restaurant I decided to try a combination of small plates. The first dish I had was the Szechuan Raviolis ($7.95), which were a type of dumpling that I had steamed which came with a spicy Szechuan Vinaigrette. The dumplings were excellent, perfectly steamed and filled with a well spiced pork mixture. The only problem that I had with them is that the sauce overpowered them. It is best to have served on the side.

The Szechuan Ravioli were perfectly cooked.

The next dish I ordered was the Roasted Pork buns ($6.95), which were a type of opened face bun filled with crispy roasted duck sliced thin and tucked into the bun with a side of scallions and plum sauce to dip into. These were heaven as the combination of soft buns with crispy duck had a nice crunch to it and the plum sauce added a zing to it.

The Roast Pork Buns, Duck Buns and Shrimp Buns are excellent.

Another dish I enjoyed Pork Dumplings ($7.95), which had another spicy mix tucked into a light wrapper. I had them steamed but again remember to ask for the scallion and butter sauce to the side for dipping.

The Pan-fried Pork Dumplings are crisp and delicious

I tried the Vegetable Dumplings ($7.95) but I had them pan-fried. I thought this added to flavor with that extra crispness to them. The chopped vegetables inside were fresh and sweet and the soy sauce served on the side added to their flavor.

The Scallion Pie ($5.50) is a version of a Scallion Pancake that is fried out crisp and served with the plum sauce on the side topped with more scallions. Each bite revealed finely chopped scallions accented by the sauce that gave them a savory flavor.

The Scallion Cakes have freshly chopped scallions in each bite

On my second trip I finished my Good Friday meal with a nice sized bowl of Fried Rice ($7.95). Being a religious holiday, I had to avoid meat. That was no worry the waiter informed me. This sticky rice combination has scrambled eggs, chopped scallions and bean sprouts. This has a nice combination of flavors and textures and flavor is fantastic. Light with an accent of chicken stock.

The Fried Rice here is light and flavorful

On my third trip to Big Bowls for dinner with my aunt, we shared a order of the General Taos Chicken Little Plate ($6.95), which was wonderful. These were small pieces of fried chicken in a honey, Hoisin hot sauce and topped with sesame seeds. Each piece burst in your mouth with the hint of hot chili.

The General Tso’s Chicken Little Plate

We shared a order of the Scallion Pie ($5.50), which are the scallion pancakes which were pan-fried to a crisp perfection served with an extra order of the plum sauce. I had enjoyed the Pork Belly Buns so much the last time that I ordered a order of the Peking Duck Buns ($7.95), which were delicious.

The Scallion Pies are perfectly pan-fried

There were two soft rice buns split with crisp Peking Duck, thinly sliced with plum sauce and sliced scallions tucked inside and these also had a nice bite to them. The duck was juicy and flavorful.

The Peking Duck Buns

The Duck Buns are crisp and juicy

I never intended to order dessert but I had seen the dessert wontons on the back of the menu and decided that we would share the Strawberry Nutella Wontons ($7.50). These were six fried wontons filled with rich Chocolate Nutella and then topped with whipped cream and lined with fresh fruit. The plate was studded with sliced strawberries and blueberries. These were mind-blowing as they burst in your mouth with rich gooey chocolate and had the crunch of the wonton wrapper.

The Strawberry Nutella Wontons

On my forth trip to Dumpling Dojo, I just went in for a snack knowing that I had a lot of work to do that evening. I tried the Tangerine Beef ($8.95) and the Pan fried General Taos Chicken Dumplings ($7.95). The Tangerine Beef was small slices of tender beef that were battered and deep fried until crisp with a tangy and spicy tangerine chili sauce. Each bite was sweet and crunchy at the same time. The portion size could have fed two people.

The Pan fried General Taos Chicken Dumplings were pan fried in hot oil to a light crispy consistency and served with a ginger soy sauce. The chicken inside the dumpling had been marinated in a spicy Hunan sauce that gave the dish an extra zing with the side of soy sauce. A wonderful combination of flavors.

The General Tso’s Dumplings were excellent

On another recent trip, I tried the Crispy Crème Shrimp ($8.95), which was a deep fried large shrimps with a sugary glaze that had both a sweet and tart taste to them. They were crisp on the outside and the sweet moist shrimp were tender on the inside.

I also had the Steam Soup Dumplings ($9.95) which were moist juicy pockets of seasoned pork in a tender dumpling wrapping. They are juicy when you bite into them served with a soy sauce. The Pan Fried Shrimp Dumplings ($8.95) were crisp on the outside and moist on the inside served with a soy ginger sauce.

The Steamed Soup Dumplings

My brother and I came here for dinner when he was in town and we ordered many of things I had had in the past like the Steamed Soup Dumplings, Peking Duck Buns, the Scallion Pie (Pancakes) and the Peking Szechuan Ravioli. Everything was delicious.

Our Dumpling Dojo dinner

We tried a couple of new things this time as well. We had the Spicy Shrimp Buns, which were shrimps that were batter fried and had a tangy spicy sauce with fresh scallions between the steamed buns.

The Spicy Shrimp Buns were delicious

Another dish we ordered was the Tangy Chicken, which was a batter fried Chicken dish in tart citrus sauce. The dish was like a version of General Tso’s Chicken with a slight adjustment to the sauce. It tasted like a combination of lemon, orange and honey.

The Tangy Chicken was excellent.

For dessert, we shared an order of the delicious Strawberry Nutella Wontons for dessert. They are an unusual dessert and are delicious.

The Strawberry Nutella Wontons are wonderful

The service here is very helpful in making the many choices that you have and could not be nicer. The food comes out very quickly so that you can enjoy your meal in a timely manner.

Dumpling Dojo is the whole package.

*Please note that the prices here reflect when the blog was written and may have gone up post-COVID.

Sometimes you just come across a place that has the whole package. Good food at a fair price, a nice selection on the menu and good service. I was working in the neighborhood where Pompeii Little Market is located and stopped in for a Coke.

What I found was a delightful little deli that is part grocery and part deli with a nice selection of wraps, hoagies and subs, salads and panini’s. There was a small selection of hot foods and specials of the day. They also have a small selection of breakfast items and sandwiches in the morning.

I went in for lunch another afternoon for one of their sandwich specials and had their Italian hoagie special which was $5.95 for this large sub that was filled with ham, salami, provolone cheese, fresh lettuce and tomatoes, shredded onions with a vinegar and oil dressing on a chewy fresh roll. The sandwich was excellent with a nice combination of flavors and was big enough for two people.

The lunch specials are really good.

I was not just impressed by the way the sandwich looked but also with the friendliness of the service here. Everyone could not be more welcoming and friendly. The staff here is very quick with the orders and the quality is excellent. I was very impressed on my second trip, and it won’t be my last.

On a second trip to Pompeii, I stopped to have one of their lunch specials and ordered the Chicken Parmesan hoagie. The sandwich was a very nice sized over-stuffed sandwich with what looked like three nice sized breaded chicken breasts with marinara sauce and sliced mozzarella tucked inside a crusty fresh Italian bread ($6.95). The sandwich was then warmed up and had a nice gooey consistency.

Their Chicken Parmesan sandwich is delicious.

I also got a side of the pesto pasta salad with chicken and sun-dried tomatoes that was delicious as well. The deli used fusilli that was cooked al dente with a nice sized chunks of chicken breast and sun-dried tomato mixed in ($6.95 a pound). With a can a Pepsi, it made a very nice lunch.

They also have a nice catering menu so check out their website above.

Their catering menu is really nice

The Catering menu has an assortment of salads, entrees and sides that come in a half tray and a full tray. The prices can run from $35.00 to $50.00 for a half a tray and from $45.00 to $95.00 for a full tray these depend on the item.

You can order anything from a half tray of Antipasta Salad ($40.00) to a full tray of their Chicken Marsala ($85.00). The selection of items is very extensive.

Since my thirty two mile walk around the Island of Manhattan, I have stayed clear of New York City for the time being while things calm down a bit. Since my walk and even on Father’s Day weekend there have been a rash of shootings and thirteen people murdered in various neighborhoods. The papers said they have not seen anything like this since the late 90’s before Rudy Giuliani became Mayor and started to clean things up in New York City. What really spooked me is that I walked through parts of Harlem that were affected the day of the shootings especially between East 145th to East 118th Streets before I got on the riverfront walkway. I still can’t believe that people would act this way at a time like this.

The Waldwick Whistle Stop is a small restaurant located directly across the street from the Waldwick Museum of Local History and from the Waldwick Railroad terminal.

This wonderful restaurant is a hidden gem of great food and friendly service. They have the most wonderful and reasonable selections for lunch that include deep fried hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers (deluxe), chicken fingers, chicken and tuna salad sandwiches and grilled cheese. For snacks there is French fries, mozzarella sticks, mac and cheese bites and Taco in a bag, chili in a bag of Frito’s. The best part is that everything on the menu is under $10.00.

The Cheeseburger Deluxe is excellent

I ordered the Cheeseburger Deluxe with French Fries ($5.50) and it was excellent. The burger was perfectly cooked with the right amount of caramelization and the fries were crisp and freshly cooked. The portion size was quite large so remember to bring your appetite.

Waldwick Whistle Stop II

The counter at the Whistlestop Café

I enjoyed the food and service so much here that I returned after my tour of the Waldwick Signal Tower for some of their ice cream. The Waldwick Whistle Stop carries Nelson’s Ice Cream out of Amish Country so there is a high butter fat ratio in their ice cream which makes it extra rich and creamy. A scoop of their ‘Unicorn Cake’, ice cream with cake dough in it hit the spot.

The ice cream section at the restaurant

On a second trip when visiting Waldwick and the general area, I stopped again for lunch and met the owner, Tammy, when I was ordering my lunch. What an engaging owner and what a nice conversation we had on the fire service (I am a fire fighter and so is her husband as well as her son and she is an EMT), so there was a lot to talk about. We knew some of the same people.

The place is so friendly

The prices have not changed since the pandemic and she as a owner believes in keeping things reasonable for her customers.

The Breakfast menu in 2022

The prices are very fair and the portion sizes are generous.

The Lunch menu

I ordered the six piece Chicken Fingers meal with a side of French Fries and these were nice sized chicken fingers. The lunch could have fed two people comfortably. The chicken was nicely fried, juicy and moist and full of flavor. The honey mustard sauce they were served with tasted homemade.

The Chicken Fingers were excellent

I ate out at the picnic tables outside the restaurant and just enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather on this late October day. It was fun watching the trains go by across the street at the tracks. The restaurant is located just around the corner from the train station.

I then visited their garden (there house is right next to the restaurant) and saw the train display that they set up as well as their house was totally decorated for Halloween as well as their lawn and garden.

The lawn by the Whistlestop Café

The yard is between Tammy’s 100 year old house and the restaurant. It was beautifully decorated for Halloween.

The yard was decorated for the Halloween holiday in 2022

The cemetery feel of the lawn between the restaurant and Tammy’s house

They did a wonderful job of decorating including the mannequin of the ghost at the top window of the house.

Tammy’s house was decorated to the hilt for Halloween

The house is over 100 years old Tammy explained and is a historical site so it made it even creepier. It was such an interesting and engaging display and you can walk around the property admiring the gardens.  It is such a nice addition to the restaurant.

The service here is extremely friendly and engaging. They talk with you as they make your order and could not be more personable. It is such a treat to eat at a local restaurant with good food and service at a reasonable price.

The welcoming feel of the Whistlestop Café

The whole café with the theme of trains and train travel played into the décor by the picnic tables and outside the restaurant. It is such a nice place to eat breakfast and lunch on a warm day.

I found Chefski’s Polish Home Cooking in a rather unusual way. The President of Poland was visiting the United States and Wallington, NJ where the restaurant is located has one of the biggest Polish populations in the country. This was one of the restaurants mentioned in a long list of businesses that was recommended to visit at that time.

Chefski's II

The restaurant is located in a small strip mall (the original Chefski’s closed in 2023)

I finally got a chance to visit the restaurant a few months later and was very impressed by the food, service, portion sizes and prices. The restaurant is a small place located in a strip mall next to a busy intersection. Not the fanciest place and with only a few tables, Chefski’s has a really busy take out business.

Cheski's I

The inside is nice but plain

I stopped in and ordered the Combination Pierogi Sampler ($8.25) which were twelve freshly made on premise pierogi that were filled with potatoes, mushrooms, pork, beef and chicken and were fried in butter and onions and served with sour cream. Each one was like a little bite of heaven. They were perfectly cooked and loaded with filling. I highly recommend trying them.

Chefski's I

The pierogi combination is light as air

For dessert, I had another order of pierogi this time filled with blueberries ($7.25) and again perfectly cooked and I topped them with cinnamon sugar. They were plump and filled with juicy blueberries.

At the next table I saw people eating the chicken cutlets with mashed potatoes ($12.99) that looked really good. Two nice sized breaded chicken cutlets fresh out of the fryer served with a large portion of mashed potatoes. That seemed popular with people.

The Chicken cutlet special looked really good

At another table I saw people eating Potato Pancakes ($11.00) that were served with a large portion of sour cream. These were also cooked in oil and fried to a golden brown.

The menu:

Chefski's III

What I liked about the menu is that nothing is over $10.00 and during the lunch hour they have a lunch special that is $8.00 with an entree and a side with soup. I thought that sounded very fair.

Another unique feature is that I was the only person eating there who spoke English. The rest of the customers spoke Polish. It made the trip interesting.

Rutt's Hut

I have been coming to Rutt’s Hut since I was 12 years old and I swear that the place has not changed since then. It is a somewhat run down roadside restaurant that has been around since 1928. Today you still have the bar, the sit down restaurant and the walk up stand for hot dogs and fries.

Rutts Hut II

The dining room here is very interesting

The hot dogs here are amazing! They deep fry their pork hot dogs in hot oil and they come out of the fryer all shriveled and crackly. When you bit into them, they snap and crackle with each bite. They also make their own homemade mustard-relish that you can put on top and it is delicious. You can taste the spicy pork in every bit.

Rutts Hut

The deep fried hot dogs

The French fries and onion rings are also cooked to perfection in the fryer and come out golden brown. They snap when you bite into them. For an extra fee, you have them topped with gravy or melted cheese sauce.

Rutt's Hut II

The French Fries here are so crisp

I have to admit in the forty years I have been coming here I have never had anything outside the hot dogs, hamburgers, French Fries and Onion rings and that is okay with me. Maybe one day I will venture further on the menu but for right now a hot dog for $2.35, French Fries for $2.20, hamburgers for $2.00 and Onion Rings for $2.85 (2020 prices) is okay with me.

I have been coming to Spindler’s Bakery for years. They had been open for almost fifty years before they closed the original bakery. The family pursued other interests while the bakery went through a few other incarnations with other owners under different names.

The selection is small but has a lot of nice baked items to choose from.

When they reopened a few years ago  Spindler’s Bake Shop came back strong with some of their noted items like their Butter Cookies which are sold both retail and wholesale and their crumb cakes, which are very popular with the Sunday morning set.

Their boxed Butter Cookies make a nice gift

My favorite items that they carry in their retail case is their Apple, Blueberry and Lemon Turnovers which are delicious especially the lemon. It is a large triangle of pastry dough filled with a lemon pudding type filling baked golden brown and topped with a thick white icing. A nice combination of sweet and savory flavors.

Spindler’s Apple and Lemon turnovers are a real treat.

The Apple Turnovers are an excellent dessert.

Their Black & White Cookies are also delicious. The soft cookie is topped with a thick layer of chocolate and vanilla icing and you can taste the sweetness in every buttery bite of the cookie. They are a traditional treat at this bakery.

Another item I like is their Boston Cream doughnuts when they are available. These plump little pillows of dough are fried and then filled with custard cream and topped with a thick chocolate icing. Each bite has a complex sweetness. Their butter cookies are really good as well. Not too sweet buttery crisp cookies topped with a sweet sugar or chocolate icing and topped with sprinkles.

They are also featuring Cream filled Chocolate Chip cookies that are really good. These freshly baked Chocolate Chip Cookies are soft and chewy and the cream oozes out with each bite. They are really good.

Spindler’s Bake Shop was the Runner Up for the new Merchant Category for the Hasbrouck Heights Men’s Association Halloween House Decorating Contest in 2022. With bears and witches on their way to trick or treating in the windows to decorative holiday treats lining the shelves and tables of the inside of the store, Spindler’s dazzled the judges.

Owner Ginny Spindler and one of her employees graciously accepted the award one afternoon. It was an honor to award this to one of our long time merchants of Downtown Hasbrouck Heights.

I wrote this article for Patch.com back in 2013 and I would like to share it with everyone:

Spindler’s Bakery: A Hasbrouck Heights Tradition returns to town

“What makes our business a success is that we get involved in the day to day operation of our bakery,” said Ginny Spindler, who along with her husband, Bob, reopened Spindler’s Bakery in 2008. “For a customer, it is nice to meet the owner where they can connect with you. We have customers who are multi-generational. I have worked at Spindler’s Bakery since I was in high school and have watched customers come in who are now coming in with their children and grandchildren. We have a very loyal following.”

Ginny and Bill Spindler, the owners of Spindler’s Bakery

Spindler’s Bake Shop was opened in 1956 by Bill Spindler Sr., Bob’s father, who had immigrated to this country from Austria and his wife, Marie. “Some of my father-in-law’s family had lived in Emerson at the time and my father-in-law had invested in bakeries both in Hasbrouck Heights and Jersey City, but wanted to concentrate on only one establishment, so he put both of them up for sale and the one that sold first was the one in Jersey City, so he concentrated on building the business in Hasbrouck Heights. He brought our famous cookie recipe which we are so known for at the bakery.”

Spindler’s remained a family affair until 1988 when the bakery closed. “My husband got an excellent job in the grocery industry and wanted to concentrate on spending time with our family.”

“It was fate that we had reopened,” Ginny added. “I had just been laid off from my job and we both really missed the business. Then the owner of our old space closed up shop about the same time and we looked at one another and said it was the right time to reopen. The timing was perfect.”

The Spindler family has a long history in Hasbrouck Heights. Bob’s parents had lived in town for over 30 years and Bob and his brother, Bill grew up in town and are Alumnus of Hasbrouck Heights High School. Bob and Ginny set their roots in town as well and their children, Tracy and Bobby are HHHS Alumnus as well.

“Bob started to bake when he was 10 years old and grew up in his parent’s business,” Ginny explained. “That’s how we met. I was working the counter in high school and we got to know one another and enjoyed each other’s company. It’s funny now how we can finish each other’s sentences. When our children were young, they also helped in the business as well and had done so through their college years. Even now as graduates with their own jobs, they still help out baking cookies and doing work around the store. We have a lot of fun when it is just the four of us working at the store on late nights,” Ginny said with a smile. “We really enjoy working together as a family.”

“When we reopened the bakery, we brought back some of the favorites that the bakery had been known for in the past and our traditional customer base can still find the same crumb cakes, seven layer cakes, novelty cakes and turnovers that they bought in the past,” Ginny said. “Where we have seen tremendous growth has been in our wholesale cookie business. We are selling them in ShopRite’s throughout New Jersey, at Best Yet Markets on Long Island and in specialty shops.”

The butter cookies gift box

“What started out as a fanciful package of cookies to give as gifts has blossomed into a commercial business that keeps growing every year,” Ginny said. “I would give our packaged cookies as gifts to people during the holidays and I would find that they would return the tins hoping we would fill them with cookies again in the future. This is what has made the cookie business successful. We want to produce and package our product that I would bring with pride to someone’s home for a special occasion. Please look for our signature gold label, ‘Spindler’s Gourmet Butter Cookies’.”

“We use the freshest ingredients in all of our products. All of our cookies are hand-dipped and we take special pride in packaging them in attractive boxes or with colorful bows. We match the quality of the packaging with the quality of our product. All our products are made with the freshest eggs, butter and sugar. No preservatives are added.  To us, reputation is important.”

Their wonderful selection is limited but really good

“What also sets us apart from the supermarkets is that we still make all the specialty items at the holidays that you can’t find elsewhere,” Ginny said. “We still make the traditional gingerbread man and gingerbread houses that we can customize with the person’s name on it. We still make lamb cakes at Easter and currently for the 4th of July, we will be making red, white and blue cupcakes and fresh fruit tarts to mark the beginning of the Summer. You won’t these things elsewhere but in a private bakery.”

“We as a family and as a business try to offer the best product we can make,” Ginny concluded. “We offer very good customer service and a friendly atmosphere to all of our customers. I have to say that I love what I do!”
