I came across La Crosta when I first started to walk the rim of the middle section of the Upper East Side for my blog, “MywalkinManhattan.com” and found it was hidden behind some scaffolding around the building that it is located in. I saw several people walking in and decided to take a peek at the menu. It was very nice, very reasonable and had a nice selection. Their reviews on both TripAdvisor, Google and Yelp were very encouraging so when I did the extensive walk of the Avenues and then the Streets of the neighborhood, I decided to try it for lunch a few times. I have to say that I am very impressed by the food and service plus its a nice place to eat.

The restaurant is a little cramped but everyone is walking in and out with their orders. It caters a lot to the hospital employees at Cornell-Weill so there are many to-go orders. I enjoy eating there because there is a pretty lively crowd at lunch time. They also have a nice lunch special where they feature at least three entrees for $7.00 until 3:00pm. That is a very nice deal for lunch.

Wonderful Lunch Specials

The food is wonderful but at times can be a little on the spicy side. Their sauces have a pinchiness to them that you might feel later. Overall though, their portion sizes are more than fair, their food is always freshly cooked and it is always served hot.

The first time I went in was for a quick slice of pizza and a Coke ($4.00). Their pizza is well-cooked with a flavorful sauce and lots of cheese. Even when the slices are warmed over, they are stillĀ have that gooey-cheesy consistency. Even when ordering their entrees, order a slice as a side just to try it.

Their pizza is excellent

IĀ dined there recently and I had their meatball sandwich, which was loaded with homemade meatballs, sauce and topped with a large handful of mozzarella cheese. The meatballs were large and flavorful and had a little zing with peppers in them. These guys know how to spice.

The meatball sandwich is really big

Another time I went I had the spaghetti and meatball special which was $7.00 and a meat pinwheel, which contained ground beef, sausage and pepperoni ($2.50). Everything was freshly made and delicious. Their spaghetti sauce is well-spiced and they give you a large portion of spaghetti with a side of fresh meatballs and bread. The pinwheel was loaded with meat and topped off with cheese which made it soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.

I recently had a rigatoni with meat sauce ($7.00) that they had on their lunch special and it was very good. I was served almost a half pound of pasta with a rich meat (most beef) sauce with a side of bread. The pasta was cooked perfectly but could have been a little warmer but the meat sauce made up for it and when mixed on the plate was perfectly fine. It had a rich tomato flavor that mixed well with the sloe simmer with the meat.

On a recent trip, I tried their Chicken Parmesan sandwich ($8.75) and it was really good. It was served on a crusty toasted hero roll piled high with a freshly fried and chopped up chicken cutlet topped with their delicious tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. It had a nice cheesy consistency in every bite and a nice combination of flavors.

The prices have gone up a dollar for their lunch specials and they are now $8.00. Still it is a bargain for what you get for lunch. I tried the Fettuccine Alfredo lunch special today and it was excellent (See review on TripAdvisor). The restaurant gives you almost a pound of freshly cooked pasta with a Alfredo sauce that was made with butter, cream and garlic with just a hint of cheese. The dish was really rich but every one in a while you need this. It was served with fresh warm bread. I don’t know how I did it but I ate a slice of pizza too. It was in the case just out of the oven and their sauce is excellent.

Their rich Fettuccine Alfredo is delicious

The menu at La Crosta is very reasonable and you can leave having a nice lunch or dinner for a very fair price. Don’t let the lines fool you. They will get you in and out very quickly. The service at the restaurant is very good and the guys get the food out pretty quickly knowing that they are dealing with a lunch time crowd from the hospital. I have always found the staff here to be very nice.
